Habitat Gardens

In September 2021 NeighbourWoods North began the process of creating habitat for insects and birds – focussing on the area along the pathway parallel to 8th Street. Our first project was the establishment of four large Meadow Gardens designed to support our threatened insect pollinators. These pollinator gardens are planted with many species of native plants – blooming from late spring to late fall – designed to support these essential species throughout the growing season.
Along the pathway we are also adding plantings of native shrubs to provide protection and food for birds and other small creatures. So far we have plantings of native Sumac, High Bush Cranberry, Nannyberry and others, along with non-native Crabapples. There are plans to continue adding more each year.
We meet weekly to maintain these plantings – weeding out grass and non-native species, adding more native plants as we learn what works in this site…and what doesn’t.
Consider joining us to help establish this important area of habitat in an area that is largely devoid of any natural supports for birds and insects.
